Twisted Turbine slot REVIEW

Twisted Turbine ReviewFantasma Games is not yet a major player in the industry, but they have managed to make a name for themselves with highly original themes and a visually pleasing style. Twisted Turbine plays right into that image, as it comes with a cartoonish futuristic style and neat innovative mechanics. This is one of those games that you really need to play to fully understand, but it revolves (literally) around the rotating reel set feature that also increases the win multiplier.

Even the reel setup is highly unusual here, and it reminds us of one of those X-shaped ships in Star Wars. It all plays out on a 5-3-1-3-5 grid, and you have 225 ways to win. Bets can be placed between 20p and £100 per spin, and you can play on both mobile phone and tablet devices. The game is visually well-made as usual from this developer, but the pace of the game is a bit too slow in our opinion. The reels are set in some kind of factory (or perhaps it’s a spaceship), and there is a turbine spinning behind the reels.

The volatility can be pretty brutal in this game, and you really need lengthy cascading wins to get anywhere in the base game. The red and blue robots will give you “credit wins” of 1x your stake for 2 consecutive wins with symbols of the corresponding color, and the progressive multiplier increases up to 20x if you manage to rotate the grid 4 times. It gets even better in the bonus round, where the multiplier values increase and the credit wins don’t reset on non-winning spins. Read more about that below, and also check out our 200 spins experience (with video) further down in the review.

Twisted Turbine

What are the bonus features?

This is one of those games that can sound a bit complicated when you read about them, and the bonus features are definitely unusual in Twisted Turbine slot. We will do our best to clarify everything for you here.

The simplest feature to understand is the classic Avalanche, or Cascading Wins, feature. Winning symbols are removed from the reels and replaced by new symbols, and this process continues as long as you keep landing new winning combos.

Both the red robot (on top) and the blue robot (at the bottom) have a Turbine Robot meter. You fill the respective meters by landing 2 consecutive wins with the same color symbols (all symbols are either red or blue). Filling a Turbine Meter also gives you a credit win of 1x, and filling the bottom meter will rotate the grid by 180 degrees.

Now the bottom robot (which is the blue one at the start of the game) will be the top robot, and vice versa. The spinning of the reel set also increases the so-called rotation multiplier. This multiplier has 4 levels, and goes from 1x to 2x, 4x, 10x and 20x at the highest level.

When the cascading wins sequence comes to an end, the multiplier you have achieved will be applied to the sum you’ve racked up in the display below each of the robots. This also means that the multiplier is reset to 1x again, as you start a new round.

Free spins in Twisted Turbine

The circular mix of red/orange fire and blue electricity is the scatter symbol in this game. You will get 10, 15 or 20 free spins when you land 3, 4 or 5 scatters, respectively. The Turbine Robot meters and the Credit Wins will not reset on losing spins in the bonus round, and the multiplier values are now increased to 3x, 5x, 15x and 50x. You can also land 3 or 4 scatters during the free spins round, and this will give you 10 or 15 extra spins.

How to play

Fantasma Games runs with the same game interface on all their games, and you’ll find everything you need on the right-hand side. In this part of the review we will walk you through everything you need to know to get started with Twisted Turbine slot, and if you are new to online slots you might wanna pay extra close attention.

We always take a closer look at what the hamburger menu is hiding when we start out with a new game, and this is where you find the paytable in this game. The dynamic paytable will display each symbol combination value based on your chosen bet level, and the payout values range from 0.5x to 2x in this game. This is pretty low values compared to many other games, but that’s not so unusual in games that come with a high multiplier potential.

It does mean that one-off wins will not be all that exciting usually, but the point of this game is to get the rotating reel-set multiplier going, as this is how you can win big. The golden W is the wild symbol, and it will step in for all regular symbols to help you form winning combos. The wild is not worth anything on its own, however.

Twisted Turbine

The game runs on a Win All Ways engine, which means that you need to land a minimum of 3 matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from anywhere. This leaves you with 225 ways to win, and you can scroll further down in the paytable to read all about the game features. You can also click the “i” icon to get to the game rules section, where everything is explained in a more formal manner.

The gear icon opens up the game settings for you, and here you can turn on/off the music, game sounds and skip the intro screen the next time you load the game. Click the coin stack icon below the spin button to set your bet level between 20p and £100 per spin. You can then set up the autoplay feature with between 10 and 100 autospins, and also set a win or loss limit to stop the feature as you see fit. Of course, you can also spin the reels manually, if you like to exercise your mouse finger.

The 200 Spins Twisted Turbine Experience

There is something transformerish about the robots in this game, and Fantasma has managed to breath life into them in a charming way. We looked forward to seeing how this strange creation would play out with our 200 spins test session, and we decided to go with a moderate bet level of £4 per spin at first.

Make no mistake about it, you will get plenty of dead spins in the base game here. The volatility is high, and the payouts are pretty small from the rather low-value symbols. Unless you get the multiplier going, you are basically a sinking ship here. This was the case for us at least, and we really struggled getting the darn thing to rotate.

We had a few smaller credit wins of around 4x our stake which made the red robot smile, but it was hardly enough to make us exercise any facial muscles. At a certain point we decided to up our game a little, and switched to a stake of £100 per spin. This didn’t seem to help at first, but then we suddenly triggered the bonus round.

We had 10 free spins to play out now, and the multiplier meter went all the way up to a juicy 50x. Things started out pretty well, as we got 3 cascades in a row, and managed to rotate the grid by landing 2 blue wins. All this happened on the very first free spin, and we rotated the grid once again and won a total of 13.2x our stake with help from the 5x multiplier.

Rotating the reel set and increasing the multiplier seems a lot easier in the bonus round, and we kept getting smaller wins from the 3x multiplier as the reel set rotated once every other free spin for a small while. We ran into some dead spins after that, and yet another rotating win at the very last spin. All in all, we got away with 37.6x our stake, which was not all that impressive, but we will probably be back for more at a future crossroad.

Review Summary

Twisted Turbine is cleverly designed and put together, and it’s really all about drawing those cascading wins out as much as you can. This is easier said than done however, and the base game can be a bit frustrating when things don’t go your way. We certainly got our fair share of dead spins in the base game, but things got a bit better when the bonus round was triggered.

The credit wins from each of the 2 robots will not reset between free spins, but the multiplier meter still resets once a cascade is over. This is a bit frustrating too, and big wins are in no way guaranteed from the bonus round. The pace of the game is also somewhat slow, and this is certainly not a game for players who just want a traditional slot experience. If you enjoy somewhat intricate games with the potential for long-winding cascades and big wins, you should probably give Twisted Turbine a try.

If you’re looking for more slots with a robot theme, we have 41 in our catalog at the time of writing. Since Twisted Turbine is a pretty unusual game in many ways, it’s hard to find something that’s quite like it out there. We have done some digging however, and come up with a few alternatives you might like if you enjoyed the game at hand.

Wild Robo - is set inside a robot factory, and the conveyor belt in front of the reels comes with wild robots during the respins and free spins feature. These wilds are of different sizes and configurations, and you can win up to 2,878x your stake in this medium variance title from Yggdrasil.

Big Bot Crew - takes you into a parallel reality where you will help some genius kids design cool looking robots. This is a highly volatile game form Quickspin, and you can win up to 5,203x your stake here. You will benefit from 4 Bigbot wilds, and these can help trigger the respins feature that might turn all of the reels into wilds. There is also a bonus round here, which comes with a nudge feature for the stacked wilds.

Wild-O-Tron 3000 - takes you into a sci-fi robot factory, and all the robots can either land as parts on the reels, or as fully stacked complete robots. There is a Wild-O-Tron feature that will trigger at random times, and this can turn all instances of between 1 and 6 robot symbols into wilds. You can win up to 500x your stake on this medium volatile title from NetEnt.
