Dragon Shard slot REVIEW

Dragon Shard ReviewDragon Shard is a fantasy themed slot from Stormcraft Studios, and it was launched on Microgaming’s Quickfire platform on the 29th of May 2019. The main characters are the Ice King and the Fire Queen, and their two corresponding dragons. The reels are set in a forest opening with a giant crystal and some ruins in the background.

The game comes with 5 reels, 5 rows and 40 ways to win, and you can place bets as high as £200 per spin across all platforms and devices. The Ice King and the Fire Queen are fighting over an ancient crystal artifact, and the dragons are by their sides. A random mystery symbol will benefit you in the base game, and if out activate the win booster you can win both ways.

The main attraction is the free spins feature, and here you can benefit from up to 3 fully stacked mystery reels on every spin. The regular RTP is 96.41%, which is quite ordinary. The Win Booster feature gives you an RTP of 96.77%, which is not much of a difference, really. This is a medium variance game, and you can win up to 800 times your stake here.

What symbols are there?

The Ice King and the Fire Queen are the highest value regular symbols, and they also come stacked 5 symbols high. The scatter and the wild pays a lot more, though, and you also find the regular low value symbols on this paytable:

Dragon Eye Scatter - Pays 100x for 5 on a payline

Dragon Shard Logo Wild - Pays 20x for 5 on a payline

Fire Queen - Pays 8x for 5 on a payline

Ice King - Pays 8x for 5 on a payline

Red Fire Dragon - Pays 5x for 5 on a payline

Blue Ice Dragon - Pays 5x for 5 on a payline

Big Crystal - Pays 4x for 5 on a payline

Card Suit symbols - Pays 2x for 5 on a payline

What are the bonus features?

The first thing you need to decide on is whether or not you want to take advantage of the Win Booster feature. If you do, you’ll benefit from win both ways mechanics, but this is going to double the price per spin, just so you know. There is also a Mystery symbol that can land at any time and transform into a random identical symbol.

Free spins in Dragon Shard

The free spins feature on Dragon Shard is triggered when you land at least 3 Dragon Eye scatters at the same time on the reels. This immediately gives you 10 free spins, and each free spin will benefit from a Mystery Reel on 1 to 3 of the 3 middle reels.

This Mystery Reel will only land Mystery symbols, and you will get 1, 2 or 3 Mystery Reels if you land 3, 4 or 5 scatters, respectively. You can also collect more free spins by landing more scatters, and you get 1 spin per new scatter you land.

What is the jackpot (max win)?

There is no progressive or fixed jackpot to be found on Dragon Shard slot, and the potential on this medium variance game is not massive. The max win is still 800 times your stake, which means you can take home £160,000 if you play with the highest stakes possible.

You can bring this game with you to show off to friends, and win big while waiting for a mate on the local pub. Whatever device you prefer is good, be that iPhone, iPad or Android.

SlotCatalog verdict

Dragon Shard is a pretty balanced slot with a nice adventure/fantasy theme, and decent graphics and soundtrack. It’s nothing out of the ordinary, but that’s really become Microgaming's trademark in recent years. Stormcraft, who’s behind this game, has not impressed us very much so far, and they certainly don’t with this rather forgettable game either.
